Student Housing

Here you find information about the different options of accommodation

Accommodation in Stuttgart can be obtained in different ways.

The campuses of the University of Stuttgart are provided by the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart with rooms, especially for new foreign students (between 80 and 90 % of the international master students live there), which lay close to the other university's facilities. The subsidized student housing available on campus costs approx. 260-360 EUR/month.

Single furnished rooms in university housing with kitchen and washroom facilities are available. Meals are not included in the rental fee and dishes are not provided. A room is rented from the first day of each month. Moving in on a weekend or a public holiday is almost impossible.
These rooms are offered on a "FIRST COME - FIRST SERVED" basis to students. In order to reserve a room, a deposit (EUR 700) must be made along with EUR 300 as a partial payment towards the first month´s rent.
You can take a look at these rooms in Studierendenwerk Stuttgart. There you will also find the application forms.

Admitted students will be informed by email about the application procedure.

Note: Students who have turned 30 at the start of studies cannot apply for a room

  1. Single furnished rooms in the student dormitories are provided with shared kitchen, bathroom, shower and washroom facilities. They are available from approx. EUR 260 to EUR 360 per month (including utilities). Meals are not included, bed linen and dishes are not provided. New bed cover, pillow and bed sheet can be bought from the Studentenwerk / caretaker upon arrival (approx.48 € for 5 pieces). Rentals begin at the first of each month. You may only move on weekdays (Monday-Friday).
  2. Note: If you want to bring your family to Stuttgart, we suggest that you first come alone and rent a single room for six months. During these six months, you have the opportunity to search for an apartment for two or more persons. For a family visa you will have to prove an apartment with sufficient living space (in sq.m) Please ask at the German Embassy for exact regulations.
  3. Note: minimum rent duration: six months! Please read the rent conditions carefully: You can only move within the same student dormitory, not to another student dormitory and only if you have good reasons. There are neither special student housings for women only nor for men only.

Youth Hostels are an option if you arrive out of office hours or at a time when you cannot move into your residences (as mentioned above).

Of course, it is also possible to find accommodation in the free market of room/apartment rentals, but obviously these rents are comparatively higher than the ones that can be obtained from the University.

Shared apartments, called "Wohngemeinschaften (WG)" or furnished rooms or whole apartments can be rented. Rooms in WGs can be found (as well as other rooms and apartments) on bulletin boards around the university and in the following newspapers:

"Stut. Wochenblatt"

Appears on Thursday afternoons, but can also be obtained at newspaper stands. It has the most ads.

"Stut. Zeitung"

Has classified ads on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

"Stut. Nachrichten"

Has classified ads on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

If you are looking for another option (short-term rent, subletting, private market, apartment for families, among others), you can find more information on the webpage of the University of Stuttgart - Housing.

Average rent outside university housing:

350 - 500 EUR per month

Tips:

Check posting dates of ads and bulletin boards, have a good map on hand and please check in your contract whether "Nebenkosten (NK)" (utilities, such as water, heating, garbage removal, electricity, etc.) are included in the rent!
